Theaster Gates

Harpsichord, Lower Register

2014

Theaster Gates is a famous black artist from the United States. He refers to himself as a potter living in Chicago, but his work spans a number of disciplines, from painting and sculpting to installations and performances. In this piece, we see Gates' most representative method—his use of tar. This material originates from the artist's father, who was a roofer. Gates painted tar onto wooden boards, transforming them into abstract installation/painting pieces, and demonstrating his ability to create objects. In addition to artistic creation, Gates has been a long-standing participant in community movements in western Chicago. Furthermore, he has integrated his creative work into these movements.
