Lee Kit

'Your Future's Bleak, You're So Last Week.'

2014

Hong Kong artist Lee Kit should be considered foremost a painter. He uses materials such as picnic blankets, cardboard, and printed images in his painting; these materials are both part of the creation, and, at the same time, used in the artist's daily life. For example, the picnic blanket comes from an outing Lee took with his friends in 2003 during the SARS outbreak, and has also been used by the artist in his home as a rag. Although these materials are latent with the artist's most private personal memories, experiences, and emotions, they have never been sacred objects. Lee reveals to us these most commonplace and yet eternal instants, returning to the fundamental essence of politics.
