A FLODED HOUSE

Architect: Liu Heng

Location: Nanjing, China

The design started originally from a dialogue between an artist and an architect:

Artist (Song Dong): The writing of an ambiguous house: the virtual user “the ambiguous” invites 11 people in art circle to participate in this architectural intervention. They all have different understandings and imaginations towards this house. “The ambiguous” collects these information and brings them to “the architect”.

Architect (Doreen Liu): The mountains and waters here are out of reach with vague ambiguity. The imaginary house should be a four-dimensional space folded with a long two-dimensional paper, winding along the mountain trails into the water; and hence maintains and water develop an ambiguous and yet clear relationship within reach. It is even more ambiguous to derive ambiguity from clarity. Thinking about a house “built” with words and built by an architect, it must have an interesting difference……

Structural System

The architecture is made of reinforced concrete and steel structure. The model is formed of a long twodimensional paper rolling from the top to the slope. The space formed by “paper” is constructed with steel structure so that structuring concept and architectural concept are coalesced completely by forming the stable structural system with reinforced concrete.

The “paper” made of reinforced concrete and steel structure is dark red bare concrete, keeping tracking of strip-template at the same time. “The box” made of steel structure is gray steel structural member and glass wall cuticle. In the meantime, the folding door of the open space is widely used to corral the functional space, so the space is very flexibility.

Architecture works integrate design concept, character interaction, forms and venues. Her works give more reference to owners, designers, artists, construction of side, operators, etc, in different levels of architecture concepts and practice.
