Haroon Mirza, a series of light works, 2019

Rules of Appropriation is a series of work which ruminates on collaboration, and speaks to the failure of non-collaborative practice. Collaboration, in its broadest sense, is a key element of Mirza's work, and his pieces involve multiple layers of interaction between materials, solar power, electricity, sound, music and architecture. Over the years, Haroon has successfully collaborated with a range of artists, musicians, film makers and fashion designers.

The works comments on the problematic appropriation of contemporary artists' work into fashion and other industries, and considers the lack of protection for artists when it comes to their artistic identity. By incorporating obvious imitation designer bags into the pieces, the works also highlight the double standards that the fashion industry has around appropriation.
